The curriculum is in!!!!!

Ok so most of you should know by now we homeschool George. This yearhe will be in 2nd grade. In the past I've basically wrote my own curriculum and used school zone workbooks. Ive not followed any real curriculum just what I felt we needed.  This year that changes. It changes for a few reasons.  1-going into secomd grade ivefelt I've felt like george needs more structure behind the lessons. I want him to get a great education and to do so we needed a better set of lessons. 2-honestly unless you have sat their and wrote lesson plans and had to find the material to print online its very time consuming. I was spending more time getting lessons together than it would take me to teach it. It just got tiring and needed to be changed. And 3- its always about whats best for george!!!!! George needed more in his lessons and he wanted it. Many times youd hear him say he wasnt ready to be done with the lesson. He just wanted to learn more.

So after months and months of research and talking with Robert I made my decisions on what we woukd use.  We still have lots of workbooks because george loves those but this year we are also working with some text books and different journals.we have lots of hands on material with tons of manipulatives. I've found new books for reading and games.   New flashcards are also in the class this year!  Here's a list of what material we have for each subject then at thr end of the list I'll share more into, links, a d pictures of the resources.

Math

-All About Reading, level 1

Spelling

-Christian Light Education, Language Arts 2

That's the base of our curriculum choices. I do have various other workbooks but ill put them after I tell you more about the curriculum.


Math-U-See
This looks like a very promising math curriculum is. There is a dvd for the child to watch that helps understand new concepts. I then follow my teachers manual and continue to teach him. Their are 6 worksheets that follow each lesson. After 3 if the chikd still isn't grasping the concepts you use the rest untik he does. With each lesson their ks a test to follow.  I will use the tests but george will only use and know them as a independent worksheet. The math blocks are also nice. They come im groupa of 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10 and 100. Heres what our math looks like.





And the blocks are nicelt pacgaged like this. I doubt they will look this nice again. Hahah.




Next we have our reading and spelling. They come from All About Learning. Since George is stikk in the beginning of reading and spellimg I decided to go ahead and do levek one for both.  The spellimg and reading use magnetic letter tiles. The spelling is mainly all with tiles and flash cards. The reading has flashcards,  3 books (each bokk has multiple stories) and a workbook. The first thing to both programs is to learn all the sounds of the alphabet. This task will take a little hopefully no more than a week and a half but it's very important to get them known correctly.

Ok the readinf which has the teachers manual,  student workbook and student readers. Also the flashcards.







And of course the magnetic tiles for both programs. I've also just ordered a magnetic white board that will be for our reading and spelling so ill update when I get that and have it set up





Yep I had fun with the tiles. They are color coded for vowlea, constants, blends and honestly I have to figure out all the groups still. Lol.




Ok so geography is going to be through a site called my little passports. The way it works is these two kids travek the world or state. Every momth they send the child a package from the destination with various things and worksheets. The first package has a map of the world or states. We are following the states and as we go I will likely add worksheets to help learn about the states. You can pay per month, 6months or 1 year at a time. We haven't received our first kit yet but when we do I'll show it off. Im really looking forward to this.


Ok so for science I chose aplogia astronomy through creation. Yes we are spending the entire year lernimg about the solar system and space. This is where we have our first text book. Ill read to him and we will discuss the text and then use his junior journal to follow along. Their aee also experiments and other activities to go long with it.




For writing I chose writeshop primary book b. This is gonna help teach thw child various things about composing letters properly. How to  properly write a story and how to address evenelopes. So be on the look out you never know who we may decide to send a letter to.  We have a teachers manual amd student pages.






Along with writtng we have language arts. This will help us with our grammar skills. I chose cle language arts. It has a teachers manual amd 10 workbooks for the child. Each workbook has a few lessons and their not thick workbooks.





So thats a basic curriculum. I have various other workbooks which I'll make a later blog to highlight. Hope you enjoy seeing what we will be using this year in school!
