Well we are off to a great start!! George was more than happy to start. All morning he was asking is it school time yet is it school time yet? We started at 10am and he was so ecstatic. I decorated the board and had him stand by it for his yearly beginning of the year picture.
Robert pointed out that previously I had Sept 1 marked as memorial day, it was labor day but I do not have a magnet for that so here is a corrected pic of the board.n
Off to his desk to see what mommy put on. He was so happy with it all. He got a two sided poster with teenage mutant ninja turtles and frozen. He also got his pencil box, a camo notebook, a coupon for a free book and a bonus ticket. Remember we use the tickets for how we know if it was a good day or bad. We have bonus ones just for random times. I figured id start the year off with a bonus ticket. He was very happy to hear about the new ticket system.
We then went on to talking about what's in the daily bins, of course he was ready for the file folder game. These are one of his favorite things to do. This one is pretty simple, you match the rocks up with their shadow.
Then to the desk to do our "math calendar" he found this simple and fun. A new way for use to work on the calendar at his desk. He's also know writing the date at the top. Hopefully this will help with learning the months which we haven't done yet.
Back to the floor to look at all the books we have this year. He was very intrigued by the new math we have. Here he is building and snapping the blocks together. He instantly caught on to the fact that they are grouped we counted by 100s and 10s then we moved on. Today was mainly to look at all the books so he knew what he was getting into.
We did however do a bible lesson. I read him a story from his bible and then we followed through the sheets in the bible binder. Today was all about creation. George is also working on remember this bible verse "In the beginning god created the heavens and the earth" George was very curious as how god could create all these things. I found the bible George has to be great so fair. It has pictures and the story is very easy to read and understand.
We got scratch paper! He loved making the scratches and drawing a picture. Later in the year we will make our own!!!
Time for some crafts! I got this nice trays to try and help with keeping messy or art things in this area instead of all over his desk.
We decided to make speedy snow! You just take this packet and add water. When your done you let it dry out till its down to 10% of what it grew to then in a plastic bag till next time. It works for about 5 weeks.
George was excited to add the water. Note how little snow their is..
And its growing.....
BAM we have lots of snow!!!!!!!! George had fun with this. It was rather messy on the hands but not to bad for some entertainment. Not sure I loved it enough to re buy but it was ok. George however made the mistake of licking it since it is after all snow.... He didn't like the taste and I let him know not to do that again.
We made an ape. He got to stuff it and add all the stickers. He's been carrying it around all day. Found them at half price books for about 4$ not to bad for a fun little thing that he can do mostly on his own. The felt pieces to stick on don't come off the backing very well without taking all the sticky with them so I have to peel them for him.
Back side
We move onto the last thing we did today and by far my favorite. Its called knetic sand. It doesn't harden and is very easy to pick up a piece that falls off. People compare it to moon sand but better!
You can tell George loves it
We buried his hand which he laughed and laughed about. All he's done since we finished our day was ask to play with the sand again... hahah
This pencil was in his first day box. He loves Dr Who and I found this Dalek pencil at half price books so I had to get it.
So that was our first day back. This week will mainly be getting to know the workbooks I got and then next week we will be using our main curriculum books. Hope you enjoyed seeing a peek into Georges first day in second grade!
